We currently have the following roles available:
Fundraisers
As our services and impact in the communities we serve increases, so does our need for funding. Fundraising, if done correctly and with inspiration can be incredibly rewarding for those who participate. If you would like to become an ambassador for PAAH, please make this known in your application and speak directly to our manager, Julie Vivier. It is important that any volunteer fundraising activities are discussed before implementation as we do have a formal strategy in place. All fundraising activities are subject to the manager’s approval.
Become involved in fundraising in the following capacities:
Committee member
Members meet once a month with the manager to discuss various events and propose fundraising ideas. This committee is currently under review for the financial year 2009/2010.
Source income and in-kind donations
Please inquire about a complete list of items we purchase for the Home. The more we are able to get donated, the more we will save on our budget.
Source contacts
You never know what type of service we may require. When meeting a professional of any kind, inquire as to whether he or she would be willing to offer his or her services for free or at discounted price to PAAH should it be required at any point.
Assist with the planning of events; or just participate!
One of our ongoing events is called Nappy Drive, which was created and is run by PAAH caregiver, Maggie Lekalakala. Join us on the streets of Joburg and don your bonnet and nappy to collect funds and raise awareness for the Home.
Run a book sale.
Book sales are extremely profitable for the Home as the cost of running them is kept very low. All books are donated to the Home. Running a sale involves sorting the books, transporting them to and from a sales site, and collecting sales. Previously, the sales have been run once every several months, on a Saturday from 8:00 till 12:00 in Parkview.
The Tin Can
Placing, monitoring and collecting branded tins in and around the Greater Johannesburg area is highly beneficial to our organisation but is also very draining on our resources. The cans do not only raise funds for PAAH, but they promote awareness of the Home. Each tin averages R35. 100 tins placed will raise roughly R3500! Volunteers who place and monitor tins will be asked to deliver them to PAAH which takes responsibility for counting the contents.
Distribute our My School Programme form, and our monthly wish list.
By becoming part of My School, every time you shop at participating stores, including Woolworths among many others, you earn money for PAAH. Do you have friends who are interested in supplying much-needed goods for the Home? Pick up our wish list which is updated every month. Friends with limited time on their hands can place orders through Pick ‘n Pay Home Shopping online. Or they can contribute to the cost of caring for the babies by depositing directly to our bank account, details of which are listed at the end of this document.
Donate goods, new or used
We fundraise by running new and second hand sales. We also deliver items to Hospice and to Dunne’s Auctioneers to sell for us.
Other tasks:
Sorting
Sort incoming donations on a bi-weekly basis.
Sort existing clothes and toys on a monthly basis
Maintenance
Do easy maintenance around the house, like putting together a donated cot.
Scrapbooking
We like to put together scrapbooks for our adoptive parents to fill them in on the months their child spent at the Home. We provide all the materials and photos for the books.
Cleaning
Our domestic staff is very busy keeping things clean for 30 babies and a full working staff. We can often use help doing monthly cleaning projects which include sterilising the milk room to keep up with health regulations, sterilising toys, wiping down the cots, washing windows, etc.
Gardening
Long-time volunteer Joanna Burek planted and maintains our beautiful garden. If you are interested in weeding, flower planting, cutting and potting plants, we will liase with Joanna who heads up this worthwhile project.
Cooking
Monday mornings and Wednesday afternoons are a perfect time to help out in the kitchen as this is when we receive our food donations. In an effort to make the most of these donations, our kitchen staff makes various meals to freeze for use later in the week. Help in this basic capacity or offer staff training so that they may augment their culinary repertory.
Training
As you know, PAAH houses three young pregnant women and is staffed by about twenty individuals. Many of the women here are keen to increase their skills set so that they may better themselves and the Home. By setting up a workshop to provide training in various areas, whether it be cooking or crafts for example, you will be contributing to the long term sustainability of the Home and the self sustainability of the mothers.
Driving
We receive weekly donations from Woolies in Greenside (Sunday at 16:00) and The Fruit Spot in Marlboro (Wednesday in the AM), both of which need to be picked up at the site and delivered to us. We also take goods from PAAH and deliver them to Dunne’s Auctioneers once every two months or so.
